Create A Nice Logo Fast With No Design Skills

Design

Ok, before all the professional logo designers start running at me with fistfuls of freshly sharpened pencils, let me make something clear. This isn’t a tutorial on how to brand yourself or your business with an award-winning, innovative logo design. It’s simply an outline of how I create a decent looking logo quickly to add a little extra visual appeal to my sites. As an internet marketer, you want your promotions to look good while saving time and money, right?

Whenever I want to add a logo to the header of a site, blog, or landing page, I often just dress up a good looking font.  Whipping up something that looks decent requires minimal design skills, minimal effort, and anyone can do it. Plus, it will save you money on outsourcing fees and might even be fun!

Here’s how to do it:

Finding And Choosing The Appropriate Font:

You’re not looking for the ultimate font here. You’re trying to do this in record time so you can move on to other areas of your business. Time is money, so let’s make it fast.

Go to DaFont.com (or your favorite font site)
When you go to free font download sites, the fonts will be categorized, so that’s already a head start.

Click on a category that matches your niche
Again, you don’t have to spend too much time thinking about this.

If your logo is for a tattoo site, try Gothic, Old English, or Grunge fonts.

If you have a  site promoting article writing software, maybe look under the Handwriting fonts category.

You get the idea.

The fonts, by default, are listed by popularity, and I almost always see a good one to use on the first or second page of the catgeory I select.

Now, download a font and install that puppy!
If you need help installing fonts, DaFont has a help page

Finding And Choosing A Good Color Combination:

Choosing the right color combination is a huge advantage for making a simple logo look good. However, you don’t want to spend time testing out colors randomly from the color wheel. That’s a time waster, so I use ColourLovers.com

Colour Lovers is an awesome resource for color palettes, patterns, and general ideas for matching color combinations. In this case, we’re just looking to choose a couple colors quickly from an existing palette to use for our logo:

Go to ColourLovers.com and choose Palettes from the top menu and then Search from the sub menu.

Search for a palette. You will see a few options in the search function, but we want to make it easy, so just enter a keyword that matches your niche. Let’s say you’re promoting an ebook on How To Go Green. Enter a related keyword, like recycle, or even go green, into the field and then search. You will get a ton of great color choices that are suited for your going green niche logo.

Now, just click on the palette you want to use. Once you click on one you like, you will see HEX and RGB color codes to enter the colors into your image editor. But, if you that’s mumbo jumbo to you, then just right click the big palette image and save it. Now,  you can choose the colors from that image using the color picker in your image editor.

A quick tip on choosing colors Very often, I will just choose 2 shades of the same color to make things simple. The light one will be the main color of the text and then I will apply a stroke (outline it) with the darker shade.

I show you in an example at the bottom of the post.

If you are going to do this on a regular basis, then I’d suggest joining ColourLovers. It’s free, and you get a few different types of download options, as well as the ability to save favorites which can really come in handy down the road.

2 Quick And Easy Ways To Dress Up A Font In Photoshop:

Ok, now you have a good font and a matching color combination. Here are two simple things I do to dress up the font to create a logo in Photoshop quickly:

Stroke. This just adds an outline to the font. As I mentioned above I’ll use 2 shades of the same color from the pallette that I chose. A light shade as the main color of the font, and the darker shade as the outline.

After you type the font using the light shade you selected, simply go to the top menu in Photoshop and select LAYER/LAYER STYLE/STROKE.Then, choose the color and the size of the stroke/outline.

Drop Shadow. Sometimes I don’t even use this, but a little shadow can go a long way. Don’t go crazy with the shadow though! Just enough to notice is usually good enough.  To apply a drop shadow, you can either select Drop Shadow from the same window that was open for Stroke, or you can go to LAYERS/LAYER STYLE/DROP SHADOW.

The default settings look ok sometimes, but you might want to change the angle of the shadow, and then move the sliders to choose your preferred amount.

I show you in an example of stroke and shadow at the bottom of the post.

Easy (And Free) Ways To Add Image Elements To Your Logo:

Dingbat Fonts And Photoshop Shapes!

Dingbats are fonts that are images instead of letters. You can find tons of free dingbats all over the Internet at any free font download site like DaFont.com.

If you’re using Photoshop….

Photoshop comes with various vector shapes installed and they’re great to use when you need to add something extra to your logo fast.

The fanstastic part about that feature is that there are lots of people creating free vector shape designs that you can also download, install, and use!

Where can you find free custom Photoshop shapes?

You can find a ton of shapes available for download just by searching Google for “free photoshop shapes”.

This Site is a good start. I recently downloaded a good set of cartoonish speech bubbles there.

Adobe’s site has an area where you can grab a ton of great user-submitted shapes and other stuff too!  You have to register, but it’s free.

Installing the shapes is easy. From the shapes tool bar, click the drop down at the top that reveals your shapes. Then, click the little arrow in the window for a sub menu, and choose “load shapes”. Now, just choose the shapes file that you downloaded, and voila!

A Few Quick Examples:

I created a few fast examples so you can get a visual of how I apply what I’m talking about. This post might seem long, but when if you try this, you’ll see it can be really fast to create a decent logo. These literally took 5-10 minutes.

Here’s an example using the green palette example from Colour Lovers that I used above. (I chose the same font from the Go Green site I sold recently and quickly added a random Photoshop shape I have installed).

The following are two examples of how easily you can create a fast logo using ONLY fonts in 5 minutes.

I left them black because I did them quickly, but using just one solid color to match your site would be fine.

I downloaded a dingbat font that had the DeeJay/turntables image and the text is from different font.

The swirls in the tattoo design is also part of the font I used.  These aren’t masterpieces, but I think they look pretty good considering I only had to download 3 fonts and type to create them.

If you don’t have Photoshop, you can still apply these simple methods, except obviously without Photoshop Shapes.

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about learning to whip these up for your affiliate promotions.

Hopefully you try it out and see how easy it can be and save yourself some money on outsourcing fees. Also, if you’re the creative type, you might even have fun with it!

Do you use that site for animations? There’s nothing wrong with using that free tool (or any other) if it saves you time and serves your purpose.

@Missy: Cool beans. Quick and easy is good!

@Forest: Thanks! Regarding your design business, you will always find potential clients who don’t ‘want” to do it themselves, or are too busy to even bother trying, etc., so your biz isn’t really in jeopardy by offering tips to clients. Plus, even if you lost a client on the easy stuff because you gave them some free help, they’ll remember you for that and either recommend you to others or come back to you for a bigger job later. In my opinion, it’s never a loss to help someone out, which unfortunately, not enough people agree with.

@Coach: Hey! Thanks for stopping in! You can make custom bullets the exact same way - using Photoshop shapes. If you don’t use Photoshop, you can find dingbat fonts or just search for “free vector images” online.

Since a bullet is so small, I’d recommend that you use simple shape with bold lines (like a heart or a star, etc). Basically, the less detail the better because it you won’t see detail that small anyway.

As far as the RSS icon goes, it really depends on what you’re looking to create.

  20. Nick Says:

Even the title of this post offends me.

This is a big problem in design. Everyone thinks they are a designer, yet have no idea what they are talking about.

With this article, you’ll have some dolt, go pick a font he likes (which will most likely be horrific) and then add some clip art they like (again, probably horrific) and then proclaim “I designed a logo”

They’ll have put no thought, no effort into it, and will have a extremely sub-par logo that will not compete with other professionally designed logos, there for cheapening the brand.

Pay a professional to do your design work. But if you do not value your business enough to have it professionally presented, then the best luck to ya, cause your going to need it.

  21. Jay Says:

    @Nick: Thanks for your comment.

I’m sorry you’re offended, but did you read the article, or just the title?

In the first paragraph, I clearly stated this is aimed at people like me who promote affiliate products and need simple logos all the time just to add more visual appeal to their promotion pages, blogs, etc.

It’s not a lesson on how to brand an identity with an innovative logo design.

I completely agree that if you are in need of “branding” that hiring a professional logo designer is a good idea. There’s a lot more thought/research needed.

However, a lot of people who create affiliate product promo pages, blogs, etc., just need something simple and don’t need to have a stellar design to go on every one of those sites/pages (which can be upwards of 100s or 1000s).

As much is it might suck to hear as a designer, lots of people only need what you would call a “sub-par logo that will not compete with other professionally designed logos”.

On top of that, for internet marketers starting out it can save them money, and also be fun to try something new on their own.

    Cheers!
    Jay

I’d love to see his web site.

  23. Nick Says:

Jay, thanks for your response. I must admit, I missed the first paragraph. I started reading at: “Here’s how to do it:”

    BUT, my point remains.

Wayne, you are the exact type of customer I do not want. Sure, you can build your own website. And if its for personal use, or just a hobby blog, that may be fine. But if it is for your business, that you feed your family with, you should get it done by a professional.

Again, if you don’t value your business enough to have it presented professionally, then I don’t know what to tell you

  24. Girish Says:

    Hey Jay,

Awesome tutorial. I followed the steps and came up with the logo on http://www.americanbeachvacations.com

However, the font is pretty thin and the stroke effect isn’t clearly visible.

Also, I’m getting stuck on the dingbats and shapes step. I just can’t seem to find a proper shape or dingbat. Are dingbats meant to be typed out?

Lastly, what font have you used for the Go Green logo?

Sorry for the barrage of questions :p

  25. Jay Says:

@Nick: NP, I appreciate your point of view and that’s what the comments section is for. But again, this is about people creating something themselves in order to either save money starting out or to simply give something new a try and possibly even have fun in the process.

Nobody’s saying to never hire a logo designer. However, I’ve seen MANY people hire so called “professional logo designers” who charge money for creating stuff that’s no different than the result of the process I’ve outlined above.
(not to be mistaken or lumped in with some of the amazing logo designers out there who create killer designs)

Also, I think you’re still missing the point of making a fast logo.
Many of us will create several niche content sites that earn monthly income from visitors purchasing something after reading and then bouncing off to an affiliate product. The visitors are coming for the content, not the logo, but it’s always nice/beneficial to add a little extra spice with a nice header/logo whenever you can.

As another example, if someone is creating a blog that they plan to sell in 30 days for $500-1500, does it make sense to spend $500 on a logo? No! So creating a fast one that “looks cool” and suits the niche adds to the site and also saves time/money. In my experience, after doing it several times this way, you’ll often come up with a design that is just as good as the one you hired the logo designer to do for you for $xxx. So, I showed everyone how I do it.

Anyway, the fact is that I respect what you do a great deal. I used to do it for a living myself for a short while and I’m big fan of art in general. I’m also a big fan of helping people out though :)

Leave your site url so we can see your stuff! :)

Cheers Nick, and thanks for comin’ around
    Jay

  26. Jay Says:

@Girish: Thatnks for dropping by. Yeah, I’d make the font bigger vertically for that space you have. If you’re using Photoshop, you can tweak the font more than just the entrie size by opening the “character” window. From top menu, choose “Window/Character”. You will see percentages where you can scale the font vertically or horizontally, instead of changing the size in general.

I only quickly glanced at your site, but I assume you chose two blues to represent water. Maybe look for a “water wave” shape or dingbat to stick above below, or beside it. Strafish?

Yes, dingbats are typed out. You install them the same as you would any other font, and then each letter on the keyboard will be an image in the collection.

    Cheers!

Well, having all that said is fine and dandy. Sometimes, you can just look at something and say ‘that’s good enough for now’ and get things rolling in other, more important areas. I like this post because it’s a walk-through that shows how to get something done, when I don’t want to spend $300 or more creating comps. That can come when money comes in.

I usually use some pretty horrific stuff for my half-baked ideas for sites…ugly…

I still haven’t had time to do it though…

  32. Debt Consolidation Articles Says:

Too bad Nick didn’t want to leave a link to his stuff.

Jay, I don’t own Photoshop, but I’ve found MS Publisher has a nice set of clip art or you can import your own. You can then save the graphic as a gif, jpg, or png and it compresses pretty well. Once you have the image you can acutally use CSS and layer the text on top (if you aren’t using a special font). If you are using a special Font you could use Paintshop. I know crude, but it doesn’t do too bad.

The site in my sig is a set of themes I purchased from Mark Mason, http://www.massonworld.com

This site, I used Yahoo Site Builder for the images and layered in the text. http://www.bank-cd-rates.net

I’m on a shoe string budget. Once I have more sites going and income, I plan on using some professional help on some of the sites.

For those starting out, WordPress is also a great solution. There are lots of free themes out there with nice looking graphics. When you have income, then look for the help.

  34. Corey Freeman Says:

I don’t want to put a damper on the party or whatever, but I don’t really think that you should concentrate on getting a “nice looking logo fast.” I mean, will it end up looking okay? Yeah. However, there’s a lot more to logos than drop shadows and free color schemes.

As far as the “no design skills” goes, you still have to have some recognition of composition and you have to pick a color scheme that works. If I’m creating a gaming website targeted to 19-30 year old guys, I’m not gonna go for pink and yellow. Basic [online] color theory, yeah?

There’s also a really good article from Just Creative Design about why your logo doesn’t cost $5. (http://justcreativedesign.com/2008/05/22/why-logo-design-does-not-cost-5-dollars/)

I just think with all of the ideas that should go into a logo, grabbing a photoshop shape and some text should have more thought behind it.

  35. Jay Says:

@Corey: Hey, thanks for stopping by, and don’t worry about putting a damper on anything! I welcome your opinion and encourage you to post it.

If you notice in the first paragraph, I mentioned who I thought might be able to benefit from a “fast logo design” and why.

I agree that there is more to a logo design than color scheme and drop shadow if you need to brand an identity (I’ve posted that a few times now) but some people (like internet marketers) are in need of one (or several) “cool looking logos” fast and could benefit from creating them on their own (again, read first paragraph and the other comments to see why).

To you quote: “..you still have to have some recognition of composition and you have to pick a color scheme that works. If I’m creating a gaming website targeted to 19-30 year old guys, I’m not gonna go for pink and yellow”

I understand your point, but I’m confident that if someone is feeling creative and motivated enough to tackle a logo design on their own, they could figure out that pink and yellow wouldn’t work well in that situation. :)

Again, if you read the article (designers! lol), I’m not taking away anything from the genius that oozes out of you logo specialists out there! I love you guys! It’s about people producing their own logo design when it doesn’t call for the specialist’s touch (or $xxx fee).

Im bad for distractions and shiny objects. Then I wander off to the next tute, forget what I was doing in the first place, start something new, then the light goes on and I go back to what I was doing in the first place continue on that. Then I wonder how do I do this next thing, go find another tute, spend hours reading and mucking about.
Then I IM forest start talking about drinking beer on the weekend, getting busted by stripper cops and getting kicked out of a house party, go for a smoke, make a pot of coffee, watch the matrix, then it dawns on me I didnt finish the graphic I started.
