5 Tips On How NOT To Prepare For Your First Ever Video Post

Tue, Sep 16, 2008

Blogging, video

This is it guys, you get to see the biggest head in marketing move and make sounds from the comfort of your living room!

On Sunday, right before I was about to shut down for the night and get some sleep,  I decided to click record in iMovie and let you know a little something about me.  The following morning, I had wondered what the Hell I was thinking, and found it hard to follow my own one-way conversation. So, for those of you who are thinking of doing their first video post, I am providing a short list of how NOT to prepare for your first ever video post (and of course, I provided an example!):

[ ONE ]: Record The Video At The End Of A Long Day
If you’ve been on the computer since early morning and spent at least 10 or 11 hours straight staring at the monitor in full concentration, the perfect time to fire up the webcam is at the very end of that work session. You’ll recognize the moment that I’m referring to the next time that you begin to feel a pain in the very back of your eyes where you didn’t even know there could be pain.

[ TWO ]: Avoid Making Notes Or Thinking About The Post Content Beforehand
You know the screen that you’ll be staring at the whole time you’re recording the video?  Don not use it to your advantage. Leave it blank, showing only your desktop wallpaper, without any notes or reminders of why you’re even making the video. Think on the spot! It only makes sense to combine this with number 1 above.

[ THREE ]: Mumble And Use Your Scatterbrain Tendencies To Their Fullest Potential
This will come a bit easier for you if you followed tips 1 and 2, since you will have to be taking deep breaths throughout the recording session just to keep yourself from tipping over.  Take your time getting the point across, even if it’s a very simple message that you’re trying to convey. Also, prior to stumbling on your own thoughts repeatedly, set up the visitor by telling them that you’re about to explain your information “quickly”.  This will catch them off guard and keep them viewing for at least another 37 seconds until they realize that the only thing quick about the video is the urge to turn it off.

[ FOUR ]: Choose A Video Service Randomly
Once your video is finished, you’ll need to upload it. Just choose any service you might have heard of. YouTube? Sure! Vimeo!? Why not!?
Now you can be surprised by the crappy quality when it’s been uploaded, since you have no experience with the service and have no idea of what settings to use when you export your video. Your visitors will love that, especially when added to the hot and spicy features of number 1, 2, and 3 above.

[ FIVE ]: Hide The Video Way Below The Fold
If you’ve followed through tips 1-4, then you are obligated to include a written post  of some value to accompany the video. The best part about this, is that your first ever video, which nobody is expecting from you, will be pushed way beyond the first fold and near the bottom of the page.  As for what to write, add some valuable tips, a little humor and maybe even a bit of self-deprecation so that your visitors may pity you enough to come back or even subscribe! Ok, they won’t subscribe, but they might just pop back  over on a rainy afternoon.

As promised, here’s my first ever video post and my personal result of the 5 tips I have provided for you:

Oh….first, the big question: Did I call out another blogger at the end of my first ever video post? Of course I did!

WAHM Tara! Where’s your video? You’re the one that started it!

Don’t forget to subscribe to the rss feed or via email so you can stay up to date!

Cheers!

Jay

@Jarret: Is this the first time you’ve experienced that? lol It happens to me sporadically throughout the blogosphere. I’ve learned to live with it. Sometimes it just doesn’t add it.

  4. Ryan McLean Says:

Bummer, my internet is running really really slow because I went over my limit so I can’t view the video yet. But at the start of next month when we get our fast internet back again I will definately watch it and make a better comment.
I don’t understand why you should hide it below the fold. If you do them rarely put them at the top of the fold and put the notes below the video. Expose yourself and show as many people as you can your video. Most people love videos

  5. Jay Says:

@Ryan: Regarding below the fold…it’s sarcasm my friend! The title is how NOT to prepare your video! #5 on where to put it, is just an added little funny tidbit.

I know you’re on a mission, leaving behind a blazing trail of Smarter Wealth comments, but you gotta read the articles sometimes. lol ;)

    Cheers!

I have to say, this was a very well-made video, Jay.

By the way, you still type with 2 fingers??! And at 60 wpm?? Fortunately for me, I took a ktyping class a few years ago, and now I’m typing over 90 wpm… Yeah, be jealous. :P

    Jay,

Good to see you embracing the Big Head Avatar! It is definately classic! SuiteJ cleaning up the image and going mainstream. That’s cool, bro!

I’ll be damned if that Big Head Avatar don’t look just like you! LOL! That is really cool dude.

Anyway, for aiming at doing a crappy video, it came out well. We really got to know a lot more about you. (Confession: I never read the about page, heck, I can barely find the home page, LOL!)

You have on the net for a while and that is cool. Good points in the article, although I am guilty of doing most of them. My videos are motivational in tone, so I kind of have an outline, but really just go with my feeling. I like to speak and want to pursue that a little more, but I really like to rely on my gut and enthusiasm to make it click.

Anyway, I will be sure to follow all of your points to make my next crappy video for all 6 of my blog readers! LOL!

Peace J! And its cool if you don’t want to give me a shout out….even though I am one of your original 37 readers!

  8. Jay Says:

@Sly: Actually, as ridiculous as it is….yes, I type really fast with two fingers and a thumb. lmao. Everything I’ve ever learned is self-taught, and the typing thing is just one of my many little idiosyncracies. I should count them all down on a video post sometime. lol

@Freddie: LOL@ “cleaning up the image”…yeah, being a Dad will do that to you. :)

Ha, I know…the caricature is pretty close right? lol. My hair used to be a lot blonder when it was done, so that’s why the caricature hair looks a bit different. I had it for a long time.

Big shout out comin’ dude! Plus, eventually, the 37 originals will all get hockey jerseys with the #37 on the back. Please submit what you want for anchor text on the back of your jersey. lol.

    Cheers guys!
    Jay

  9. Mark Sierra at MeAndMyDrum.com Says:

Great first video, Jay! You have the kind of courage that I don’t. Promise me something though: don’t slip in a grille on us like Joe does from time to time, okay? It’s works for him, let’s leave it at that. :)

    Jay,

Man you gotta do a tutorial on how to do an intro like that!

Please! I beg you! I’m a video editing noob!!! Help!!!!

That was good stuff man for real. All jokes aside man, can you do a tutorial on how to do all that neat stuff?

    You branded it real well.

    You know what was missing?

A SuiteJ t-shirt. Then everything would be sweet!

  15. Jay Says:

    @Elijah: um…thanks…I guess…lol

@Luis: Actually man, I’m an editing noob too and that’s my first time doing one. I added “plain text” to a couple before, but that’s it. The images help, but I mean, I just do stuff like that in Photoshop, and plop them in the editing software. I’m glad you like it though. I could do a simple tutorial eventually on how to make stuff “fast”, because that’s what I always strive for when I’m learning something new. lol…shortcuts! What software do you use?

LOL@ 100 wpm. Thanks for having my back. If I could use all my fingers, I’d be at like 500wpm.

Ya, I dunno about that Joe man…he must be part werewolf or something.

    Cheers!
    Jay

  16. Wayne Says:

Brilliant! How come you didn’t mention me? Me? Ya know, the duke!

    lol

You looked really comfy doing that, but I suspect your exhaustion helped to create that effect. I’m going to have to watch this later when I’m able to crank up the sound.

I did everything you mentioned above Jay! And yes, I know it’s a ‘how not’ post. :P

Oh snaaaaaaaaaaaaap! That was great dude! I loved it. Sum bee man! Nice history, I knew a little bit about it, but not all, thanks for sharing! I love how the mac iMovie works man….I need that in my life. I have a mac for music production, I may try it for some videos too.

    Thanks for the love…

  18. Jay Says:

@Joe: Thanks for taking the time to watch…I know that mofo dragged on in parts! lol.

Yeah, it’s pretty easy to use (iMovie), but this is my first video and I don’t have any other software to compare it to. I haven’t even really used it before, no ‘editing” anyway. I added simple text before to a couple silly vids when I first switched to Mac, but that’s it.

I’m starting to work on learning more, because besides these kinda videos, I want to do some funky stuff with footage of my daughter as she grows up as well.

    Cheers!
    Jay

  19. Forest Says:

Cheers Jay, i’ve heard your story before but was nice to see it from your own mouth….

:) I’m with Joe is special that is for sure…. I have been working with computers for 10 years and I still type with two fingers…. :) works fine for me!

  20. Luis Gross Says:

Yes, please do the tutorial bro!

Like the site and the logo in the beginning, with the music, and the permanent logo while the video plays on the bottom right-hand corner!!!

All that good stuff, man, I’m a total noob bro!

    Software?

I have no software, not even photoshop!

    Dude, help!

Oh, I have Windows Movie Maker, ’bout it.

I just need a push in the right direction.

Awesome video, Jay. Watched the entire 30 minutes of it. LoL. I knew of your background, as i think you mentioned it to me previously.

It was very sweet to hear in the video how your baby girl changed you, and you decided to go mainstream. I can only imagine the wacky designs you must have been involved with.

I’m a pretty easy going and liberal type of gal, so no BS attacks here. Everyone has to do what they need to do to survive.

It was a great first video, i quite enjoyed it. And you did a fantastic job on it. Nice!

You do look exactly like the caricature. (big head and all) LoL.

  22. WAHM Tara Says:

Well, Well, Well Mr J pulled my pimptress card hey? HA HA

Your video was cool! It was nice to see that face behind the cartoon! ;)

How funny you had adult sites… DID you see what my post was TODAY? Great minds think alike!

How in the word do you type so fast with 3 fingers????

I guess I have to make a video now.

WAHM Taras last blog post..Would morals get the in way of money?

  23. Jay Says:

@Wayne: LOL@ mentioning the Duke. Sorry man. I had to find you first, make sure you were still around ;) I’m glad you followed the “step by step” how NOT to. lol

    Cheers!
    Jay

  24. Jay Says:

@Forest: Who dares stand against the two-finger-typer-alliance?

Luis: Yeah, you kinda need software. Lots of guys use Movie Maker, but honestly I don’t know hot it compares to iMovie. You kinda need a couple good programs though. :) Mac comes with iMovie and I think Windows Movie Maker is free, right?
You’d be surprised how easy it can be to do cool stuff once you play around with it.

@Missy: Thanks for the kind words, and yeah, my baby girl is EVERYTHING to me! There’s nothing I wouldn’t change for her. :)

I didn’t do too much “wacky stuff”, but I think everyone has their own perception of ‘wacky” is, so we’ll just leave it at that. lol
It did feel like a 30 minute video, didn’t it? lol.
I’ll try to tighten up the stuttering, but to be honest, it might continue! lol ;)

@Tara: LOL, that’s crazy that you used to promote adult sites, and that you just posted it! I couldn’t care less what people do, as long as it’s not hurting anyone.
For me personally though, I just never want to be in a position where I couldn’t tell/show my daughter what “Daddy does for a living”. I wouldn’t want her to come into my office and be forced to say “Stay back honey, Daddy’s working”. I like her hanging out in my office while I work. :)

So, I guess head over and copy all that into the comment section on your post. lol

Yes, you HAVE to make a video, pimptress! It was your idea!

    Cheers guys!
    Jay
